Creation of Long-Term Tree-Ring Chronologies for the Forest-Steppe and Steppe Zones of the Altai Territory and Their Use in Historical Research

Abstract

The article considers the possibility of creating long-term tree-ring chronologies for the forest-steppe and steppe zones of the Altai territory on the basis of the extension of the chronologies of annual rings of pine belt forests and the potential of using the tree-ring chronologies in the historical research: the dating of historical wooden objects, the study of the dynamics of extreme socio-natural phenomena, such as lean and hungry years, epidemics and epizootics. As an example of indication of historical events, the author considers the longest to date tree-ring chronology of pine belt forest — Malinowoe lake (281 years), built on living trees of pine growing in the dry zone. The minima of radial growth correspond to historical data on lean and hungry years, epidemics. Long tree-ring chronologies allow determining the year of wood harvesting for construction and, accordingly, the year of construction of wooden historical objects of the Altai territory. Most historic wooden buildings of the region currently dated approximately, dendrochronological method allows you to specify the time of creation of the listed buildings with an accuracy of up to year.
