Through the ethnography of the learning of weaving in schools/workshops, cultural associations, and foundations, which today constitute the only framework for the transmission of this technique in Italy, this paper addresses the ecology of knowledge and practices within the weavers’ community. It aims, on the one hand, to show that the practice of the loom brings the student face to face with a complex mechanism composed of several gestural and operative sequences and combinations, parts of the technical object which he finds difficult to represent; on the other hand, to question the situated dimension of “knowing how to weave”, between formal and informal knowledge in the light of the relationship that, during the apprenticeship, is established between the loom, the student and the fabric.
