Abstract

A Grave with a Male Relief from the Rough CiliciaThe author presents a possibly 1st-century sarcophagus from Rough Cilicia, hewn from rock and decorated with the relief of a male figure presented in frontal view and holding a vine in his left hand. With the aid of reliefs from other sarcophagi, Durugönül interprets the vine (and grapes) as a symbol of well-being which expresses the wish that in the afterlife the deceased may live an eternal and happy life.
