Abstract

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar as representações ideológicas defendidas por dois personagens extraídos do romance A montanha mágica (1924), de Thomas Mann, o literato Lodovico Setembrini e o jesuíta Leo Naphta. Esses dois personagens sintetizam concepções filosóficas e perspectivas sobre o ser humano que fazem parte de uma luta em torno de representações ideológicas. Trata-se de visões opostas, que, quando confrontadas, se mostram irreconciliáveis, fornecendo o combustível para a crise que resultou na tragédia da guerra. Dessa forma, o autor contrapõe, de um lado, o anticapitalismo romântico e, do outro, a alienação da burguesia contemporânea, de forma a compreender como uma classe social caracterizada por um alto nível intelectual e moral se tornou adepta à tendência fascista.
