Abstract

La noción clásica de abundancia se desarrolla después del descubrimiento y exploración de las Indias en un emblema de la fecundidad utilitarista. Pronto, las crónicas, sobre todo de los mestizos intelectuales, se apropian de este emblema y lo transforman en una alegoría cultural de la autodefinición e identidad. Guamán Poma de Ayala y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega dedicaron gran parte de su interpretación de la Conquista para desarrollar un modelo de hibridez, en que el suelo americano, su riqueza y exhuberancia, no sólo forman la historia natural, sino también el modelo cultural. El hombre nuevo, como así la nueva cultura, ya ertenecen al Nuevo Mundo. Otros autores, especialmente del siglo XIX, también citan este emblema de abundancia como parte de su dedicación al paradigma de formación nacional. Este ensayo argumenta que durante sus diversas transformaciones la idea de abundancia está íntimamente ligada a la historia cultural de América Latina y es una de sus herramientas de representación, cuestionamiento y autodefinición.
