Abstract: The objective of this Doctoral Thesis is to find optimal designs for parameter estimation and discrimination between two nested nonlinear mixed effects models which differ in their within-individual covariance matrix. A design criterion that combines a criterion for parameter estimation with a criterion for discrimination is proposed. For this criterion an equivalence theorem is provided. For the problem of discrimination between models a generalization of the T-optimality criterion is proposed and an equivalence theorem is provided. Although there are several proposed methods for discrimination in the literature, the proposed methodology in this thesis can be used for nested models discrimination, for groups of subjects following di_erent designs and for checking the optimality of a proposed design. The application of the proposed methodologies are illustrated with examples. As result of this Doctoral Thesis one research paper has been elaborated and published on the journal Ciencia y Desarrollo published by the Center for Research and Extension of thear a Faculty of Sciences (CIEC) of the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia UPTC, indexed A2 category by Colciencias.
