Affectivity and sensorial environment of the city : a sonic geography of Rennes (Britanny, France)

Abstract

This Ph.D thesis studies the sonic aspect of the affective relationship between individuals and their living territory, in a social and relational approach of affectivity. lt reveals, through the case of the city of Rennes (France), the social elements based on this relation, the factors that direct its shared or differentiated distribution between individuals, and its effects on the urban organization. lndividuals sound environments orient the familiarity they build with spaces they are living in. As a concept, sensory identity is redefined as a dynamic and evolving process of interaction between the way people look at their own experience and the environmental characteristics they associate with places. The relationship between individuals and their sensory environment also serve a collective discourse, leading to the implementation of urbanistic, political and cultural dispositives that intend to contrai its expression. The treatment of sound issues by institutional actors is reflected in the promotion of urban spaces simultaneously cairn and animated, which are supposed to improve a peaceful relationship between individuals and their territory they inhabit. Thererfore, the sound dimension of the affective relationship between individuals and their territory of life can be regarded as a new issue for city planning and urban fabric.
