Abstract

The Circular Economy has become crucial in the agri-food industry to reduce the high amount of plant waste generated. Thus, the reuse of these by-products has been proposed as a source of bioactive substances due to their properties, mainly antioxidant and antimicrobial. This opens the way for their application in various sectors such as the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries due to their health benefits. Sustainable extraction methods such as supercritical fluid extraction are applied for their valorization, overcoming the limitations of conventional techniques. These innovative techniques not only improve the efficiency and quality of the extracts, but also align with the principles of Green Chemistry to minimize the environmental and economic impact. Finally, the role of the banana sector in the Canary Islands is highlighted, where banana waste is revalued to extract nutrients and bioactives, thus contributing to the circular economy, sustainability and competitiveness of local industries.
