Mathematical Modeling Of River Flow

Matematičko modeliranje riječnih tokova

Mathematical Modeling Of River Flow

Abstract

In this paper, we will provide an overview of some types and applications of mathematical models used for simulating river flow which can be of use in environmental engineering. These include models useful for environmental impact assessment, pollution degradation speed and thermal pollution monitoring. Since all of the above is based in part on turbulence modelling, we will give the most attention to turbulence models, such as SVE and RANS. We will first get acquainted with the underlying physics of river processes, the mathematical formulations and their simplifications. Then, we will provide an overview of popular modelling techniques for turbulence, thermal, and chemical pollution transport. After that, we will explain how the actual river parameter values are acquired, give numerical solutions for solving the differential equations and finally, present the process of setting up a preliminary river model in HEC-RAS software.
