Abstract

The subject of this research is the lexemes denoting kinship and family ties as well as wedding roles recorded in the collection of short stories Slike iz seoskog života [Countryside life images] by Janko Veselinović. In his short stories set in the patriarchal rural environment of the 19th century, Janko Veselinović used selected linguistic and stylistic means to depict the life of the people of that time. On the chosen material, the lexemes which bear witness to traditional culture, folk customs, and mutual relations in the social community such as bata, kum, momčad, naja, rođeni, seja, udova [brother, godfather/best man, youngsters, grandmother, cousin, sister, widow], etc. will be presented. The mentioned lexicon will be analyzed from the lexical, semantic, and ethnolinguistic aspects by separating the thematic groups of the noun lexicon, their description and analysis, and by investigating the linguistic and stylistic means used by the writer.
