Changing use, changing needs? The use of amulets from the first century BCE to the early Christian world

Description

Graeco-Roman amulets were used for many centuries to protect people and their belongings, to cure them or to provide them with supernatural benefits. The relationship between amuletic objects and the spaces to which they were attached turns out to be fundamental for the use of amulets. The permanent physical presence of amulets facilitated meaningful sensory experiences which had a big impact on amulet users. This basic picture remains the same in Late Antiquity. However, by adding Christian texts, images and by using Christian rituals, Christian amulet makers also provided a tangible and personal experience of the new religion.
