[EN] Levels of DDT and PCB were determined in sardine and horse mackerel sampled in the fish market of Vigo and caught in the ria. The mean concentrations of total DDT were 0.11 ppm and 0.055 ppm in whole sardine and dorsal muscle respectively; 0.055 ppm in whole horse mackerel and 0.026 ppm in horse mackerel's dorsal muscle. The average concentrations of PCB were 0.38 ppm; 0.16 ppm; 0.27 ppm and 0.19 ppm in whole sardine and horse mackerel, and dorsal muscle of both species, respectively. Residues of total DDT in both species did not increase with the length class (fig. 1), but the percentage of p,p'-DDT decrease in favor of p,p'-DDE in the greater length class (fig. 2). It is also observed that the levels of PCB decrease with the length increase, in the sardine; while in the horse mackerel it is opposite (fig. 1). It is not possible to found a relation between increase in the percentage of oil and concentration of organochlorine compounds (figs. 3 and 4), this may indicate either rapid residue elimination, or a recruitment of fish from uncontaminated areas
