
This report shares findings from a pilot study involving a ‘cool roof’ retrofit intervention in the Northern Region of Ghana. Two phases of data collection took place: surveys in 50 primary schools to map existing school infrastructure and heat-mitigation practices; and a difference-in-differences study to assess the impact of a cool roof intervention across 20 classroom blocks, comparing two different paint treatments to unpainted roofs. Results indicate that a cool roof intervention can reduce classroom temperature, with specialised paint having nearly double the treatment effect of the basic paint (2.21°C vs 1.27°C) and its effect strengthening (compared to control schools) during hours when learning is taking place and the sun is at its strongest. The discussion focuses on the viability of a cool roof intervention to mitigate extreme heat in Ghana’s Northern Region, the feasibility of its implementation, and design implications for future research.
