The paper is based on the materials of St. Petersburg periodicals: the "Severnaya pchela" newspaper, "Syn Otechestva" and "Severniy Arkhiv" magazines. The author comes to conclusion that the metropolitan pedriodicals provide, as a rule, unique information on the creation of the first archaeological museums in Odessa and Kerch, replenishment of the museum collections (including import of antiquities from abroad), the first excavations in Crimea, and ethnographic observations of correspondents. Publications in the periodicals partly replaced archaeological reports which were absent at that period. A number of sources are made public for the first time after their release in 1825–1827.
