In his dialogue Politikos, Plato mentions the dyadic arithmetic of the Pythagoreans as an example of pure knowledge. In the history of mathematics, this number theory is deemed to be the starting point of deductive mathematics in ancient Greece. Numbers are distinguished as even or odd and according to their divisibility properties. The Two can be divided into halve sand is female whereas the One is not dividable and male.
