Abstract

Private collecting and artistic practices of reproducing Ukrainian traditional clothing Summary. The article is devoted to the modern artistic practices of reproduction of traditional clothing as one of the characteristic markers of national identity. In Ukraine, such practices became widespread in the 2000s and significantly increased in activity in the 2020s, just before full-scale Russian aggression. Most of the time, private collectors are the ones who organize artistic workshops on the replication of folk clothing. The close relationship between the practices of the private collecting and the reproduction of folk clothing is discussed in the article on the example of the activities of the collector and master embroiderer Halyna Hafiychuk, born in 1978 in the village of Glushkiv, Kolomiysky district, Ivano-Frankivsk region. It has been established that individuals involved in the described practices constantly improve their knowledge and skills. This contributes to the appearance of high-quality artworks, which, despite their high cost, are in stable demand. Among all the elements of the traditional Ukrainian costume, shirts are the most popular, which is especially evident in Mrs. Hafiychuk’s collection and creative practices. The craftswoman makes shirts for sale according to authentic samples of the late XIX and early XX centuries, using natural fabrics and threads and applying various hand embroidery stitches. The activities of Mrs. Halyna Hafiychuk serve as an example of how combining private collecting of folk artworks with artistic practices of their replication is a real and viable strategy for preserving and expanding Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
