Abstract

Las aguas residuales, originadas por actividades humanas, contienen una variedad de contaminantes que pueden representar un riesgo para la salud y el medio ambiente si no se manejan adecuadamente. Para abordar este problema, se utilizan lagunas de estabilización, que emplean procesos naturales y biológicos para reducir la carga contaminante en estas aguas. Históricamente, el diseño de estas lagunas se centraba principalmente en la eliminación de materia orgánica biodegradable. Sin embargo, existen diferentes métodos de diseño para estas lagunas, y uno de los enfoques es el uso de lagunas facultativas, que aprovechan la adaptabilidad de los microorganismos a condiciones variables. En este taller investigativo se empleó el método empírico de McGarry y Pescod, que se centra en reducir la demanda bioquímica de oxígeno (DBO5) en el proceso de tratamiento, la cual mide la cantidad de oxígeno necesaria para descomponer la materia orgánica en las aguas residuales, y su eficacia se evalúa en función de la reducción de la DBO5. Se identifico el punto de inflexión en los valores mínimos de DBO soluble que pueden tratarse en este contexto.
