En este artículo introduzco el estudio de la fonotáctica, las reglas sobre cómo se combinan los sonidos en una lengua. Como enfoque, describo las restricciones fonotácticas en quechua, que restringen las combinaciones de las consonantes oclusivas. En quechua las palabras con combinaciones de oclusiva-glotalizada u oclusiva-aspirada están ausentes: no hay palabras como *[kap’a], *[k’apha], *[k’apha] etc. (la estrella * indica que una forma es imposible según la fonotáctica de la lengua). Los resultados de dos experimentos muestran que los hablantes nativos cometen errores cuando tienen que repetir o percibir palabras inventadas con estas combinaciones ausentes. Una comparación con los patrones en otras lenguas nos dice que el efecto en los experimentos con quechua hablantes refleja la fonotáctica particular del quechua y soporta una teoría en que las restricciones fonotácticas son una parte de la gramática de la lengua.
