Carbon Dioxide Exchange in Complex Topography

Authors: Matthias Reif;

Carbon Dioxide Exchange in Complex Topography

Abstract

Data and programs provided for the paper: "Carbon Dioxide Exchange in Complex Topography" Here you can download programs and data to plot all the figures shown in "Carbon Dioxide Exchange in Complex Topography" and recreate the source code by using a .patch file. For Fig. 1 and 2 can be created withou input data. Fig_1_topo.m Plots the idealized valley and the flat reference plain. The output for Fig. 2 is based on the soubroutine "stomata" of the CLM module in WRF. Fig_2a_Stomata_GPP_of_Temp.m Fig_2b_Stomata_GPP_of_VPD.m Fig_2c_Stomata_GPP_of_CO2.m For Fig. 3 and 4 the raw output of one set of runs (valley and flat) of the ensemble ist stored in the folder "raw_WRF_output" for each PFT (hence one can plot 4 PFTs not just the two shown in the paper). In these folders you can also find initial soundings and namelists of these WRF runs. Fig_3_contour_CO2_and_Theta.m Fig_3b_contour_Wind_and_TKE.m Fig_4_ridge_bottom_flat.m For Fig. 5 to 9 the output of the ensemble simulations has around 800 GB of data, Only the plotted variables were extracted and were converted to .mat files with extract_raw_to_mat.m and are provided in Plot_Data.zip. To plot Fig. 5 to 9 use: Fig5_6_9_scatter_plots_means_and_Table2.m Fig_7_8_Ensemble_scatter_plots_Tref.m Changes to the WRF code All the changes of the WRF source code are documented in the file changes_WRF_CLM.patch. All changes which are specifically for CO2 exchange are marked with cmr (changes matthias reif), additionally there are changes from johannes wagner with the tag cjw, which define the topography and several other changes for diagnostics for LES simulations which do not affect the results. Tests have been made with LES and some of these diagnostic variables but were not relevant to the results. To get the changes into the code, download WRF version 3.5 and insert the changes into the original code: patch -ruN -d WRFV3.5 < changes_WRF_CLM.patch
