Abstract

Adverbs and adverbials are widely analyzed in current linguistics, may it be from a delimitational or classification perspective (recently: Duplâtre/Modicom 2022) or, as here, from a variational perspective (e.g. Hummel 2017, 2019ab). However, the adverb formed by a preposition and an adjective has gone largely unnoticed, including in grammars of Romance languages. This working paper has been conceived as part of a pan-Roman project that traces the evolution from Latin of adverbials such as à l'extrême, en grand, pour le sûr or par exprès, built with to the pattern < PREP. (+ PREP) (+ ADV) (+ DET) + ADJ >. This appendix to a journal article presents a synthesis of the representation of these adverbials in French in a corpus of essentially metalinguistic sources. It is based on major grammars and historical dictionaries of French, focusing on the history of French in Europe as well as in North America and in Quebec in particular.
