Micrargeria wightii Bentham 1846

Abstract

Micrargeria wightii Bentham (1846: 509) Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. Tamil Nadu, Courtallum, s.d., Herb. Wight 606 [in Herb. Benth.] (K, barcode K000999988 [image!], available on http://specimens.kew.org/herbarium/K000999988, Fig. 2); isolectotype: E (barcode E01153609 [image!]). Residual syntype: INDIA. Tamil Nadu, Tuticorin, May 1835, Herb. Wight [Cat. no. 2480] (E, barcode E01153610 [image!] & without collection locality, s.d., Herb. Wight [Cat. no. 2480] (K, barcode K000999987 [image!]). Notes: In the protologue of the name M. wightii, the type citation was given as ‘Indiae orientalis peninsula prope Courtallum (Wight! cat. n. 2480, et herb. Courtall. n. 606)’. In search, we traced four relevant specimens, two at K (barcodes K000999988! and K000999987!) and two at E (barcodes E01153609! and E01153610!), which are well maintained. The specimen with barcode K000999988 is from Bentham’s Herbarium with details ‘Courtallum 606’, which is selected here as the lectotype of this name. The specimen ‘Courtallum 606’ at E with barcode E01153609 is a reliable duplicate of the designated specimen, but it is not from Bentham’s Herbarium. The Wight Catalogue number 2480 is obviously a species number, not a collection number (Pers. comm. – Dr. Henry Noltie). Catalogue number 2480 at K (barcode K000999987) lacks details of collection locality, but the specimen with same catalogue number at E (barcode E01153610) bears it as ‘ Tuticorin’.
