Personal Data in Research

Abstract

A presentation on the topic of personal data and how this can be applied to scientific research in the context of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The presentation seeks answers to the question how one can best handle personal data in each phase of a research project, by introducing the basics of the GDPR and the various key concepts which are important when doing research that involves identifiable personal data. The presentation introduces the research cycle and provides pragmatic ways in which researchers can include good privacy practices during the phases of research planning, data collection, data analysis, publishing and archiving of the research data. The presentation provides researchers with a basic understanding of the GDRP, an awareness for the role of personal data in each phase of the research cycle and knowledge on when to reach out for assistance and who to contact in the support infrastructure of the Radboud University in Nijmegen. Topics include: What is the GDPR? When, where and how does it apply to academic research? What exceptions are there for special categories or sensitive personal data? How does personal data affect your storage and security practices? How to best handle personal data during each phase of your research? What are the privacy rights of your participants? How does personal data affect your possibilities to archive, share and publish data?
