Digital Twins for Physiological Equivalent Temperature Calculation Guide

Abstract

Urbanization, climate change, and growing awareness of the impact of environmental conditions on human well-being, have created the need to accurately assess thermal comfort has gained significant prominence. Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) offers a comprehensive means of quantifying the combined effects of air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation on human perception of thermal conditions. By providing a metric that integrates multiple environmental variables, PET empowers urban planners, architects, and environmental scientists to design spaces that prioritize human comfort and health. This guide aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for both novices and experts in utilizing ArcGIS Pro and Python for accurate PET calculations. It will navigate users through the conceptual foundations of PET, elucidate the significance of its calculation, and provide step-by-step instructions for harnessing the combined power of ArcGIS Pro and Python to generate precise PET maps and analyses. In the subsequent sections, we will delve into the theoretical underpinnings of PET, exploring its relevance in understanding human-environment interactions. We will then embark on a journey through the fundamentals of ArcGIS Pro, highlighting its capabilities in handling geospatial data and facilitating spatial analyses. Through an amalgamation of theoretical insights and practical applications, this guide aspires to empower researchers, practitioners, and students with the knowledge and tools required to comprehend and compute PET effectively, thus fostering the creation of thermally optimal urban environments.
