Guide for funders to support FAIR workflows & enable research tracking

Abstract

This document is presented to the community as a basis for discussion and input from September 1 to October 15, 2023. The authors will revise, and update the funder guide based on the community feedback. Please share your thoughts about the role of funders in supporting Open and FAIR research with us by directly commenting on this open Google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BLUom2BvO_v2H7fH3HKOB4KAQVqc5_woGeXDmljIBzI/edit?usp=sharing Abstract The Implementing FAIR Workflows project is a 3-year project to implement exemplar FAIR workflows in cognitive neuroscience research, based on the existing persistent identifier (PID) and metadata infrastructure. The project team at DataCite collaborated with Crossref and ORCID to develop this Guide for Funders, harmonizing information available across the open scholarly infrastructure organizations into a set of recommendations. The guide aims to introduce the role of persistent identifiers and metadata in facilitating open and FAIR research and walk the reader through ways to actively engage in implementing PIDs and metadata workflows, by committing resources, enacting congruent policies and guidelines, and providing support around grant application, management, and reporting. These workflows will provide a concrete basis for FAIR practices and output tracking, benefiting both funders and the broader research community.

This project was made possible through the support of a grant from Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc. The opinions expressed in this publication are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc.
