“André Gide et les musiciens de son temps: harmonies et dissonances épistolaires” [“André Gide and the Musicians of his Time: Epistolary Harmonies and Dissonances”], Épistolaire [Epistolary Studies], No. 45, 2019, p. 219-229André Gide was wary of letters: they establish a phatic channel between two interlocutors without always allowing them to engage in a genuine dialogue, and above all, without allowing them to establish non-verbal communication; moreover, they jeopardise the independence of the creator. Nevertheless, Gide made use of the essential distance implicit in any epistolary discussion to intervene as a critic in the gestation of the works of his friends, particularly musicians (Raymond Bonheur or Florent Schmitt, for example).
