La educación como hecho, posee un sentido humano y social. Se ha considerado como un proceso por obra del cual las generaciones jóvenes van adquiriendo los usos y costumbres, los hábitos y experiencias, las ideas y convicciones, en una palabra, el estilo de vida de las generaciones adultas. Se manifiesta como una influencia espontánea del adulto sobre el niño y el joven. La educación en las diferentes culturas de la época prehispánica se encontraba sujeta a tres fines comunes: servir a su pueblo de manera productiva, a la religión mediante el tributo a sus dioses y a su familia. En consecuencia, la educación comenzaba en el hogar y estaba a cargo de los padres siendo continua luego por otras personas. En la época colonial, durante el siglo XVII, la vida educativa en México no presenta significativas innovaciones; en el siglo XVIII se ve más marcado el proceso de castellanización, que incluía la enseñanza de doctrinas religiosas, la lectura, escritura y números. La educación ha cambiado mucho desde la época prehispánica a la actualidad, debido a la globalización y al desarrollo económico, político, social y cultural del país en el que nos encontramos inmersos.
