Las obras hidroeléctricas de Necaxa realizadas por The Mexican Light and Power Company, Lmited. Periodo 1903-1921

Abstract

En el mundo, las primeras hidroeléctricas fueron posibles gracias a los avances de la física decimonónica, especialmente en electricidad, magnetismo, termodinámica, mecánica e hidráulica. Los países más avanzados en este campo –como Estados Unidos de América y Alemania- pudieron conformar un puñado de empresas que dominaron el mercado internacional y se posicionaron como poderosos monopolios. Por razones geopolíticas, en México, el monopolio de este sector fue acaparado por la empresa canadiense The Mexican Light and Power Company, Limited, dirigida por el ingeniero norteamericano Frederick Stark Pearson. Como toda empresa transnacional instalada en un país con precaria economía, le produjo tanto beneficios como perjuicios. En este trabajo mencionaremos los beneficios en términos de modernización del país y los perjuicios a la industria nacional y al sector educativo, donde casi se extinguen los ingenieros electricistas mexicanos, entre 1903 y 1921, al no ser contratados.
