THAW – National

Authors: David John Luscombe;

THAW – National

Abstract

These data are a mapping product that uses airborne lidar data to deliver Tree Hedgerow and Woodland (THaW) baseline mapping across national extents rapidly, at ca. 1m resolution, and with an accuracy of between 91 % and 94 % compared to manually digitised features. Output mapping data allow users to distinguish features based on both the height and areas of the mapped features, allowing the differentiation of scrub, hedgerows, isolated or emergent trees, and continuous woody cover. These data are shared under a creative commons licence: CC BY-NC-ND and are distributed solely for not for profit uses associated with the Net Zero Plus project.See: www.netzeroplus.ac.uk for more information. The paper associated with these data is now published. The reference is: Luscombe, D.J. et al. (2023). Rapid, Repeatable landscape-scale mapping of Tree, Hedgerow and Woodland habitats (THaW), using airborne LiDAR and spaceborne SAR data. Ecology and Evolution. DOI:10.1002/ece3.10103. Please contact d.j.luscombe@exeter.ac.uk for any queries regarding the use of these data.

Grid codes in the included THaW GeoTIFF raster datasets correspond to the below classifications: 0 Null/Non THaW habitats 1 Below 1.3m (Scrub, Bushes or Misc) 2 Below 3m (Managed Hedgerow, Large Bushes) 3 3m to 15m (Tree Canopy, Mature Hedgerow) 4 Above 15m (Contiguous Tree Canopy) 5 Below 1.3m (Fragmented - Scrub, Bushes or Misc e.g. fence/dry stone wall <10m2) 6 Above 15m (emergent or isolated trees) 15 Open water/Non THaW habitats
