Tratamiento periodístico de los suicidios y enfermedades mentales

Abstract

No es habitual que los suicidios aparezcan en los medios de comunicación y las noticias relacionadas con las enfermedades mentales son escasas. Pero segúnla Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), casi un millón de personas mueren por suicidio anualmente y muchas más intentan hacerlo, registrando una tasa “global” de mortalidad de 16 por cada 100.000 personas, lo cual es considerado una tasa alta y un indicador del estado de salud mental. Cada suicidio, es una tragedia que afecta a familias, comunidades y países con efectos duraderos para los allegados del suicida. Es un grave problema de salud pública; no obstante, el suicidio es prevenible mediante intervenciones oportunas, basadas en datos fidedignos y a menudo de bajo coste. Su atención debe convocar a varios especialistas, no solo a los relacionados con la salud mental; en especial cuando las incidencias de estas enfermedades tienden al alza por la grave crisis que atraviesa el país. Siendo un problema social, ¿por qué aparece tan poco en nuestros medios?Metodológicamente, se revisó literatura existente sobre el tratamiento periodístico del suicidio y las enfermedades mentales, se analizaron casos concretos sobre su tratamiento periodístico en búsqueda de proponer algunas ideas sobre su correcto abordaje. Se sostiene la hipótesis que se puede ayudar a la toma de consciencia sobre estas enfermedades e incidir positivamente en su reducción, solo si hay más información sobre el suicidio y las enfermedades mentales a través de protocolos adecuados y rigurosos. Por otra parte, silenciarlo perjudica a quienes padecen esta enfermedad.
