Vivir en libertad, morir en cristiandad. Prácticas religiosas de los morenos libres ante la muerte en la ciudad de Caracas (1760-1821)

Abstract

El presente trabajo se ha estructurado en dos partes. La primera, concerniente a los espacios de la muerte en Caracas en pleno tránsito del siglo XVIII al XIX, donde se indican los principales sitios de la ciudad destinados a la inhumación de cadáveres, los problemas de salubridad que se fueron generando alrededor de éstos, y cómo las autoridades laicas y religiosas se comportaron no sólo frente a esa situación sino también ante el nuevo panorama que se empezó a configurar a causa de la guerra por la Independencia y el terremoto de 1812, todo vinculado a la intención de dar cumplimiento con las resoluciones que sobre cementerios se habían dictaminado. Mientras que la segunda, a partir de las profesiones de fe que hicieron de los dogmas centrales del catolicismo, nos aproximamos a las actitudes y creencias que los morenos libres y sus descendientes tuvieron ante la muerte, expresadas simbólicamente a través de prácticas y rituales como la confesión, el viático y la extremaunción, el amortajamiento, el velorio, el entierro y las exequias, así como los sufragios e indulgencias, siempre en estrecha relación con esas asociaciones de tipo religioso que fueron las cofradías.
