Abstract

El incendio se considera como una acción de carácter accidental durante la cual se debe asegurar la capacidad resistente e integridad de la estructura por un período de tiempo suficiente, en función de permitir la evacuación de los ocupantes de la construcción y la actuación de los servicios de extinción, limitar la difusión del incendio en el propio edificio y hacia las construcciones colindantes, y prevenir en cierto grado los probables daños materiales. Aunque el sector turístico del país se destaca entre los que aplican con mayor rigor los aspectos relativos a la seguridad ante incendio, resulta necesario incrementar la cultura profesional de los directivos y profesionales relacionados con el diseño y rehabilitación de la infraestructura de cara a minimizar los riesgos y las eventuales pérdidas en caso de ocurrencia de un siniestro. En el presente trabajo se abordan las principales particularidades del diseño arquitectónico y estructural en situación de incendio y se relacionan comparativamente con los criterios que habitualmente se emplean en el diseño convencional a temperatura ambiente. En el caso del diseño arquitectónico se enfatiza en la compartimentación horizontal y vertical, las rutas de evacuación o escape, el control de humo y la reacción al fuego de los materiales de terminación. Por su parte, en el caso del diseño estructural se exponen los principales conceptos y procedimientos a seguir para verificar que la resistencia de la estructura (o parte de ella) sea superior a la severidad del incendio a la que se expone.
