Abstract

Grotiusomyia azofeifai sp. nov. Figs 5, 25, 26, 53, 54, 80, 97 Diagnosis. Mandibles yellowish-brown with a row of small teeth at apex (as in Fig. 112); flagellum dark brown, 1.0× as long as width of mesoscutum, F4 1.1× as long as wide, apex of clava pointed (Figs 5, 53); frons between scrobes and eyes and vertex with strong reticulation (Fig. 97); occipital margin with a sharp edge behind ocellar triangle (Fig. 80); mesoscutum and mesoscutellum with same reticulation (Fig. 25); mesoscutum black with metallic tinges and mesoscutellum golden-purplish; mesoscutellum convex; dorsellum flat, smooth and shiny, posterior margin evenly rounded; fore wing with 4–8 setae in apico-dorsal part of costal cell, completely hyaline (Fig. 5); fore coxa pale brown, mid coxa yellowish-brown (Fig. 5); gaster (Fig. 25) 2.4× as long as wide; Gt 1 0.4× as long as length of gaster, dorsal surface smooth, posterior margin curved slightly forwards; Gt 6 0.2× as long as length of gaster with anterior part 2.1× as wide as width of posterior part, posterior margin curved backwards with sharp edge. Male: gaster with a pale spot in medio-basal part (Fig. 26). Description (female holotype). Length 1.6 mm. Frons between scrobes and eyes and vertex with strong reticulation, scrobes smooth. Mandibles with a row of small teeth at apex. Occipital margin with a sharp edge behind ocellar triangle. Dorsellum flat, smooth and shiny, posterior margin evenly rounded. Propodeal callus with seven setae. Fore wing with six setae on dorsal surface of submarginal vein; with 14 admarginal setae; costal cell with 30 setae on ventral surface in two rows, apico-dorsal margin with five setae; speculum distinct and closed below. Gaster long ovate; Gt 1 smooth and shiny without sculpture, remaining tergites with weak reticulation; Gt 1 with posterior margin curved slightly forwards, Gt 6 with posterior margin curved backwards. Colour. Frons and vertex metallic bluish-green, scrobes black with metallic tinges. Mandibles yellowish-brown. Antennae with scape yellowish-brown, pedicel pale brown, flagellum dark brown. Mesoscutum and propodeum black with metallic tinges, mesoscutellum golden-purplish. Legs with fore coxa pale brown, mid coxa yellowish-brown, hind coxa black with metallic tinges; hind femur dark brown, remaining parts of legs yellowish-white. Gaster with Gt 1 metallic bluish-green, remaining tergites black with metallic purple tinges. Otherwise as in female. Distribution. Costa Rica. Etymology. Named in honor of Antonio (Tonio) Azofeifa, one of the collectors of type material. Material. Holotype female: COSTA RICA, Heredia, Estación Biológica La Selva, 10º26′N, 84º01′W, 50m, 22.i-2.ii.1991, J.S.Noyes (NHMUK). Paratypes (15♀ 1♁, MZLU, MZUCR, NHMUK): 2♀ with same label data as holotype; following from same locality as holotype but collected x.1995 (1♀), 28-29.ii.2008 (3♀), 24-25.ii.2011 (2♀); 1♀ COSTA RICA, Heredia, Reserva Privada Selva Verde, 10º27′N, 84º04′W, 75m, 13.iii.2005, C. Hansson; 1♀ COSTA RICA, Puntarenas, Reserva Privada Karen Mogensen, 9º52′N, 85º03′W, 305m, 11-21.ii.2005, C. Hansson; following from same locality as previous but collected 23-24.ii.2007 (3♀), 23-24.ii.2013 (1♀); 1♀ COSTA RICA, Puntarenas, Golfito, Estación Agujas.
