The European Union is a flourishing environment for digital identity, with a manifold of initiatives promising greater user privacy and control of information through the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity. However, with no formal model to align the effectiveness of eIDs to Self-Sovereign Identity, anyone can declare adherence to SSI. This work unfolds an objective, high-quality teaching model to study the convergence of e-identity offerings toward Self-Sovereign Identity as opposed to empirical approaches. Our model ranks initiatives and streamlines the development process of eID solutions. We demonstrate its value on the most extensive electronic identification framework (eIDAS) considering period-correct generalizations. In the long run, our model urges governments and practitioners to build a robust environment for identity solutions.
