Gambierdiscus is a genus of marine dinoflagellates that produce toxins that can accumulate in seafood and cause ciguatera fish poisoning in humans. While Ciguatera illness is well-studied, less is known about the bioactive compounds produced by Gambierdiscus that are implicated in the poisoning and that may have potential pharmaceutical or biotechnological applications. In recent years, there has been growing interest in discovering and characterizing these elusive bioactive compounds, which could have significant implications for drug discovery and other areas of research. However, the identification and isolation of these compounds is challenging due to the complex chemistry of Gambierdiscus and the low concentrations of the compounds in the organism. During an oral communication, Francesco Pisapia discussed a variety of analytical and bioassay techniques, such as bioguided screening and LC-MS, which are used to isolate and identify bioactive compounds from Gambierdiscus. The search for these elusive compounds is an ongoing area of research with the potential to uncover new therapeutic agents and advance our understanding of the chemical diversity of marine microorganisms.
