The goal of nutritional and exercise interventions during ICU admission is to limit muscle loss associated with critical illness. Physiological research is needed to guide the design and interpretation of future clinical trials as there are gaps in knowledge regarding the importance of muscle protein regulation as a driver of improved physical function after ICU discharge.
