Veel minder mensen beseffen dat er achter deze voorkant een netwerk van onderzoekers, schrijvers, fotografen, programmeurs, data-analisten en andere 'Wikipedianen' actief is. Deze Wikipedianen besteden vrijwillig veel tijd aan het verbeteren van de encyclopedie. Niet omdat het moet, maar omdat het leuk en leerzaam is. De vaardigheden die ze hiermee informeel ontwikkelen - onder andere onderzoeken, samenwerken, organiseren, programmeren of omgaan met kritiek - vertonen opvallende parallellen met de 21e-eeuwse vaardigheden. En juist deze competenties spelen in de publieksdoelstelling van bibliotheken een belangrijke rol. Olaf Janssen, Wikimedia- en open data-coördinator van de KB vertelt je hoe je Wikipedia, een van de best bezochte en meest onmisbare websites van de wereld, kunt inzetten voor de doelstellingen van jouw bibliotheek. Deze bewerkers ontwikkelen vaardigheden zoals onderzoek doen, samenwerken, organiseren, programmeren en omgaan met kritiek. Deze vaardigheden vertonen parallellen met de 21e-eeuwse vaardigheden die bibliotheken willen bevorderen.
