For the first time in Azerbaijan, micromorphological features of seeds belonging to nine species (M. littoralis, M. rigidula, M. truncatula, M. arabica, M. minima, M. polymorpha, M. meyeri, M. orbicularis, M.hipulina) of three sections of the Medicago genus were studied, using the electron microscope (SEM). The status of some species of the Medicago genus, which belong to the Trigonellinae sub-tribe of the Trifolieae tribe, is controversial. Due to differences in shape and size of seeds observed under an electron microscope, these species may probably have the status of an independent species.
