Abstract

Lagenosoma eklemmum sp. n. (Figs 16A–D; 20; 27A, B; 30A; 34A; 37) Zoobank. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 81354F31-755D-4B19-B2FB-F3287FE597F9 Diagnosis. Antennae relatively short, flagellum black, flagellomeres VI and VII each distinctly longer than lengths of flagellomeres IV and V; flagellomere VII ca. 1/3 length of flagellomere VIII; male head relatively large; male postocular ridge very narrow; scutum and scutellum orange with black, punctate setal bases; legs relatively short and subequal in length; pterostigma dark brown. Description. Body length = 7.0– 7.5 mm. Head. Yellow, frons and face rounded with short, pale setal pile; parafacial with silver pubescence along eye margin; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, not carinate in male; occiput flat, yellow, covered with fine setal pile (white in male, black in female); antenna short (length = 2.3 mm), scape, pedicel and flagellomeres I–III dark yellow with dark microtrichia, flagellomeres VI–VIII black and shallow plumose, flagellomeres VI and VII each distinctly longer than lengths of flagellomeres IV and V, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 3, flagellomere VIII narrow, shallowly plumose. Thorax. Dark yellow to orange with postpronotum, scutum and scutellum with black punctate setal bases, pleuron and venter brown, more extensive in male, anepisternum white along dorsal margin, brown along ventral margin in female (entirely brown in male); coxae and legs yellow, hind tibia with black band midway; all legs similar in length and shape; haltere white to yellow; wing hyaline, venation and pterostigma brown. Abdomen. Slightly narrowed basally in both sexes, ovoid shaped and not petiolate, segment 4 widest and equal to width of scutum; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed; abdomen yellow with short black setal pile. Male genitalia. Not dissected, but externally epandrium relatively elongate; gonocoxites relatively elongate and posterolateral processes present and claw-shaped; gonostylus relatively small. Female genitalia. Not dissected. Etymology. The species epithet is derived from the Greek eklemmum —peel, rind; referring to the punctate appearance of the scutum and scutellum. Comments. Lagenosoma eklemmum sp. n. is one of three closely related species (with L. clitellum sp. n. and L. geminatum sp. n.) characterised by an orange scutum with punctate black setal bases and short antennae with flagellomeres VI and VII longer than flagellomeres IV and V (Fig. 20). It can be differentiated from L. geminatum sp. n. by the ventral surface of the thorax being dark and the narrow postocular ridge of the male. It is separated from L. clitellum sp. n. by the scutum being entirely orange, compared to the black anterior portion in the latter. In life, L. eklemmum sp. n. has blue to green eyes with three reddish-brown bands. This species is known from southeast Queensland.
