The Strasbourg philosopher and theologian Jean Héring, a member of the Circle of Göttingen and a staunch defender of Husserl's phenomenological method, initiated a debate with the Russian philosopher Léon Chestov in response to a critical paper against Husserl and the entire phenomenological school. The accusation of rationalism and the affirmation of the impossibility of a phenomenology of religion incite the response of Héring, who some years before had published his Phenomenology and religious philosophy (1926) as an attempt to apply the intuition of essences to the domain of religious experience. Héring's paper is made up of two parts: 1) a critical exposition of Chestov's arguments and 2) a detailed examination of the exposed points. The purpose of the text is, on the one hand, to defend the scientific nature of Phenomenology and, on the other, to show its openness to the richness of reality that is accessed through the intuition of essences.
