Abstract

Abstract This article captures the socio-ecological crisis in its relationship to colonial forms of exploitation and devaluation of nature. The notion of “crisis” is analyzed through a long-term perspective that traces entangled historical dynamics associated with the colonial past and the industrial capitalism developed through fossil fuels productions since the 19th century. The article interrogates the socio-ecological crisis through the lenses of conflicts defining societies’ relationship to nature through different periods. From this perspective, the examination will focus on theories that study the socio-ecological crisis in relation to forms of colonial repression and violence. Thus, the analysis will interrogate discourses on the colonial past and colonialism through the lenses of scholarly discussions on the notions of Anthropocene and Capitalocene. Ultimately, the article shows how the destructive capacity of the capitalist mode of production based on fossil fuels increases today's social conflicts by making visible the violence inherited from imperialism and the European westward expansion initiated in the 15th century.
