Today the democratic character of science is threatened by the authoritarian research assessment and by the privatization of knowledge. These are not only threatening university but also democracy. Two examples (scientific publications and university biomedical patents) will illustrate and perhaps make sense of what authoritarian research assessment and privatization of knowledge mean in the Italian university system.
