Abstract

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is one of the most modern remote sensing techniques used in archaeology. It is based on the use of an active sensor that allows information to be obtained from the surface of objects through the emission of laser light waves. In this article, we present the technical aspects of this technology, the archaeological applications and the potential derived from its use, based on a case study of the sierras of Belén and Zapata in the department of Belén, province of Catamarca. According to how LiDAR systems differ, in our study area a scan was carried out from an airplane and another from the ground. The survey had the ground support of GNSS geodetic stations. With aerial LiDAR, an area of 5.600 ha was scanned and new architectural elements hidden by vegetation were found. With terrestrial LiDAR, seven archaeological structures were scanned at El Shincal de Quimivil, obtaining high-quality information to model the sites, advantage their conservation, and to improve the divulgation of archaeological heritage. This study generated new perspectives of work from a multidisciplinary approach.
