Abstract

A cafeína e o álcool etílico são algumas das substâncias psicoativas mais utilizadas no mundo. São conhecidas por serem usadas em conjunto extensivamente. Algumas drogas alteram a forma como o etanol é metabolizado e podem aumentar ou diminuir os níveis sanguíneos. E o álcool, por outro lado, altera o metabolismo de várias drogas, afetando os níveis dessas substâncias no organismo, e pode reduzir a eficácia de algumas drogas e acentuar seus efeitos colaterais. A cafeína, por sua vez, é um estimulante, com seu principal alvo de ação no sistema adenosinérgico, com ação antagonista não seletiva de receptores de adenosina. Não é incomum o uso de álcool com bebidas cafeinadas. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre o grau em que eles podem potencializar mutuamente o consumo um do outro e o resultado dessa exposição a longo prazo. Este artigo descreve a interação do álcool com a cafeína nos sistemas do organismo de modo geral, seus efeitos e riscos, alertando para uma utilização mais segura, eficaz e racional, destacando o papel do farmacêutico e dos profissionais de saúde na gestão das interações e na promoção da saúde.
