Abstract

This article considers the evolution of the perception of China's activities in the Central Asian region from 1991 to the present. The author distinguishes three periods. From 1991 to 2013, perceptions of China were rather positive, aiming to stabilize the region. From 2013 to 2016, China's policy in the region begins to oppose Russian policy, creating an image of competitors and emphasizing the negative aspects of China's economic expansion, especially in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The latter period, which began around 2016, leads to a further expansion and strengthening of influence over the Central Asia countries, combined with a possible strengthening of Sino-Russian relations.
