THE APPLICATION OF OZONOTHERAPY IN THE REHABILITATION OF VIBRATION DISEASE (LITERATURE SYNTHESIS)

Abstract

Objectives. Ozone is considered a strong oxidant that can produce different effects, depending on the concentration and the way of administration: direct disinfectant and trophic when applied locally, systemic antibacterial and antiviral, intra- and extracellular antioxidant and cytoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiedema, detoxifying, antihypoxic, hemostatic. There are no contraindications for local ozone therapy. In the context of the above, the purpose of the study was to develop a narrative synthesis of contemporary studies on the mechanisms of action and the therapeutic ways of applying ozone therapy in the rehabilitation of vibration disease. Materials and methods. Publications were selected from the PubMed, Hinari and SpringerLink databases according to the keywords: ozone, ozone therapy, mechanisms of action of ozone, clinical effects of ozone, routes of administration of ozone, indications of ozone therapy, contraindications of ozone therapy and side effects of ozone therapy, vibration sickness. After processing the information from the databases, we selected all publications in English since January 1990. Results and discussions. Although ozone is the most powerful natural oxidant and therefore potentially cytotoxic, researchers believe that under controlled conditions it has many therapeutic effects, and reactivity to ozone can be perfectly reduced by the powerful blood and cellular antioxidant system. On the other hand, although ozone is highly reactive, it is not necessarily toxic, like any other medicine, when used properly in a safe dose. It is toxic to the lungs, but its reported toxicity ends there. Oxygen-ozone therapy, initially applied as an empirical approach, has now reached a stage where most of the biological mechanisms of action of ozone have been studied and clarified, being located in the fields of biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology. Conclusions. The general clinical effects of ozone are: direct disinfectant and trophic (tissue regeneration, healing of wounds and ulcers of various etiologies and refractoriness with reduction of associated pain) when applied locally, systemic antibacterial and antiviral due to oxidation of phospholipids and lipoproteins, intra- and extracellular antioxidant and cytoprotective by reducing oxidative stress damage, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiedema, detoxifying, antihypoxic, hemostatic, immunomodulatory. Optimum concentrations of ozone are essential to obtain a therapeutic result. There are no contraindications for local ozone therapy. An absolute contraindication for systemic ozone therapy is severe glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (favism). Ozone therapy is a method of rehabilitating vibration disease, with a positive effect, it improves the patient's condition and quality of life.
