The article deals with the problem of poetics in The Histories of Herodotus driven by examples of logoi about kings. The purpose of the study was to clarify the poetic nature of the folklore stories about kings in The Histories. Based on existing research and poetic analysis of kings’ logoi, such motives as eudaimonia, hybris, gods’ phthonos and nemesis, the motive of a wise adviser were emphasized and highlighted. The conclusion was made that the prevalence of images and plots in stories about Cyrus, Croesus, Polycrates, Darius, Xerxes may indicate the artistic and poetic adaptation of these logoi by Herodotus. The use by Herodotus of such poetic mediums as peripeteia and anagnoresis was also observed.
