This deliverable presents the results of the simulation of grating coupler designs on an SOI platform to efficiently couple light from a single-mode fiber into a low-loss single-mode waveguide and the upcoming fabrication challenges, especially with regard to fabrication compatibility with the photonic crystal device. It reports the coupling efficiencies and bandwidths of different coupler designs depending on the wavelength to address, which is given by working in air or water. It also includes the design of an adiabatic linear taper for efficient mode-field matching from a single-mode fiber (mode-field diameter of roughly 10 µm) to a single-mode waveguide (500 x 400 nm2).
