The family Sicariidae contains three genera and 169 species. Two of the genera Hexophthalma and Loxosceles represented by 14 species, are known from South Africa. The Six eyed Sand Spiders (Hexophthalma) was revised by Lotz (2018) and four species are recognized from South Africa. Three of the species have a wide distribution and is listed as Least Concern with only Hexophthalma leroyi Lotz, 2018 that is Data Deficient. The Violin Spiders (Loxosceles) was revised by Lotz (2017) and 10 species are recognized from South Africa. Six of the species have a wide distribution and is listed as Least Concern and three are Data Deficient. Only the cave species Loxosceles speluncarum Simon,1893 listed as Vulnerable under criterion D2 due to their decline in caves around Tshwane.
