Ludwig Herzfeld (1819-1911)

Authors: Moeller, Katrin;

Ludwig Herzfeld (1819-1911)

Abstract

Ludwig Herzfeld was intensively involved in the economic and political transformation of the city of Halle (Saale) into a large industrial city in the second half of the 19th century as a lawyer, councillor and liberal. He played a leading role in shaping policies geared towards liberalisation and industrialisation, also within the framework of the "Liberal Association". His work as a city councillor and member of the building commission and the savings bank board of directors opened the way for the rapid urban redevelopment in the second third of the 19th century. In many cases he took on legal mandates for the city of Halle (Saale). Contrary to what is sometimes portrayed, Herzfeld rejected the ban on social democracy by Bismarck's Socialist Laws, but he did not personally defend social democrats in the Halle socialist trials. This was presumably done by his son. Publicly, Ludwig Herzfeld refused to defend Karl Liebknecht.
