We presented the work of the data stewards at the University of Bremen and how they help to establish an open research culture in the multi-disciplinary U Bremen Research Alliance. Sustainable research data management (RDM) is an integral part of an open research agenda. However, modern RDM goes beyond the concept of open data. It aims at optimising the reuse of data by adhering to the FAIR principles - making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. These principles affect all levels of the research data life cycle. But implementation of new tools and technologies or even a complete redesign of existing workflows can feel like an overwhelming task for researchers. At the University of Bremen, data stewards will complement the existing RDM support infrastructures and facilitate this change process. They provide practical and discipline-specific support, including data literacy trainings for scientists, help with proposal writing and putting data management plans into action. Networking and the exchange with colleagues, experts and researchers interested in RDM related topics also play an important role in our work. Therefore, we engaged in conversation with you at the Open Science Festival and shared experiences and perspectives on FAIR data and data stewardship.
